Career Day 03:01
A small creature peers around the corner and blesses the ground you walk on for ya. This fern sometimes feels like it’s tearing apart, and we don’t know what to do or where to start. I just want my job to be to love the world and by the way: I want to suck out every feeling when we just want to curl up and die, and punt it out into the outer space that we feel inside our bellies because everythings still feels the same. I’ve lived between walls before, and I’ve lived in the night, and on the floor. I’ve seen what a ray of light can do. Of course it’s not one size fits all, that’s for sure.

Tabor 03:17
The fuzzy underbelly of the trunk as it sits on a hill, a couple more rope swings a piece than usual: little offerings of joy at the roots set off to the side next to movements. Just far enough to be in its own world, but not out of reach. Someday we will leave this tree but it will remember our feet putting ourselves in the bark. You and I will always have this part, a circle on the top, I’ve walked around it time and again. Sometimes I’m too tired to even go up but I imagine the trip, and you will walk for me, and tell me what you see. I’ll do the same for you.

Walk About 03:06
I have been told that I am a good example of riding off into the sunset without burning up, but here’s the secret: The earth is round, and when you off into the ground you don’t catch fire. Instead you can come again, if you want to. Instead you can walk round the spheres if that’s what you got to do, and find out everything till you feel good enough to come home. I have been told that ends are just a means to brand new beginnings where you are better off. I wouldn’t have believed it myself unless I’d seen it, but now that I’m on the other side, I can confide.

I’ll continue to bask in the sunlight of unlimited possibilities, and stop to cool in the moonlight of forever rest. I will not bake, and I will not freeze. I won’t falter for now. Sleep might not come, and the night be too long. Days last forever, but the sun will go down. But just for this wink as I rest my eyes, I feel the smile of the sun and recover the night. Well, if I never die? Well, I never thought such a simple idea would be the one to keep me alive.

The Treeline 01:20
We will lay down in the dirt between leaves and trees, until the shadows lean into each other and the moon shines between the canopy. Perpendicular to our foreheads, hands pointed towards each other’s fingertips like oranges, and wait until we cannot see the eyes that always watch: because it’s too dark to not be dreaming. Cause only in our sleep can we wake up like this and walk away.

about

I wrote these songs while the virus was spreading, and felt called to make the most pleasant little EP that I could. Sometimes in the past I have tended to make music that was about challenging themes, or experimental music that was not super easy to listen to: I figured that this was not the time for that. I wanted to offer music as a kindness ritual one could do for themselves, to take time away and feel good.

But now things are different. Now the world has woken up a little bit more to racism, there are constant protests (both peaceful and violent, both valid!) all over the country, all over the world. Escapism is no longer an option. Over the years, "Self-Care" has been co-opted by capitalism and white supremacy as a way for us white people to shield ourselves from the horrors of the world, as well as the ways that we benefit from those horrors.

Instead I am proposing a kindness ritual: an act or activity with a beginning and end that replenishes an individuals energy with the specific purposes of bringing sustainability to their commitment to doing all they can to ending racism and white supremacy, even if it gets uncomfortable. It is a long fight, and you cannot be everywhere at once, but you have to be somewhere. I wrote these songs for just a little break. For 15 minutes to feel nice, a good meal, some rest, so that your mind is fresh and you can get back out there, whatever getting back out there means to you. Maybe it means getting out in the streets. Maybe it means food justice. Maybe it means doing relay information at home or sourcing donations. There is always something to do, regardless of who you are!

For the summer of 2020, all $$ raised from this EP (along with a few others and Tarot readings) went to www.dontshootpdx.org, raising a total of $300!! Thank you!
